Statement from the Mayor: COVID-19

The circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic have created such a constantly changing environment that it has been difficult to determine the course of action that is best for the City of Starkville at any given point in time.

The department heads have been diligent in briefing their staff and ensuring that all personnel are being updated and informed regularly. As of this morning we discussed preparations for going to essential personnel only. That time has come sooner than later.

The Governor has today issued an executive order taking the state down to essential staffing. With that step from the state, the City of Starkville is going to mirror that approach and go to essential staffing only. Tomorrow night I am asking the Board of Aldermen to declare a state of emergency that tracks with that of the National declaration and the most recent state declaration.

The City will be one step away from a holiday or a weekend. We will have personnel who will be working from home; we will have emergency crews on call for major water leaks or sewer issues, but we will not be handling smaller, non-critical leaks or matters at least for this week. We will be answering the phones and responding to questions about city services.

We will always have full staffing for our fire, ambulance and police as first our responders.

The other services such as trash service for the city can’t shut down for extended periods but we can go to a reduced pickup schedule and still keep an acceptable level of service while respecting the need for caution and following the recommendations of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Governor and the President’s declaration of an emergency.

We appreciate your patience as we work our way through these incredibly difficult times. We understand the hardships for the individuals and for the businesses who depend on each other and who in turn depend on the City.
